Man Gets 21 Years for DUI Deaths
Posted By Phoenix DUI Lawyer

This week, a man from Tampa Bay was sentenced to 21 years of prison for killing two women during a series of DUI accidents.

A Florida judge sentenced 41-year-old Randy Archiquette on Friday.  Back in November, the defendant pled guilty to two counts of DUI manslaughter.  Since he refused to make a deal with district attorney, he could have faced life imprisonment for his actions.

According to local police, Archiquette caused a total of five DUI accidents within 30 minutes back in April of 2009. She only stopped driving after his SUV flipped over. In separate collisions, 69-year-old Betty Williams and 20-year-old Britney McFarland were killed by Archiquette.

When police finally arrested Archiquette, they say that his blood alcohol level was .147 percent which is well above the state's legal limit of .08 percent.

New Bill Would Cut Time for Interlock Device Usage
Posted By Phoenix DUI Lawyer

In the state of Arizona, a new bill is making its way through legislature that will cut the time a DUI interlock device must be used before a convicted DUI offender can start his or her motor vehicle.

At this time, the state requires that all first-time DUI offenders use an interlock device for a year. The interlock devices determine if drivers are drunk and if they are under the influence of alcohol their vehicles do not start.

The new bill would cut the amount of time from one year to six months.  Senator Linda Gray says that six months is long enough to punish first time offenders and in Scottsdale, a bill has been introduced that would eliminate the interlock device requirement for first time offenders altogether.

DUI of Prescription Medication a Growing Problem in Arizona
Posted By Phoenix DUI Lawyer

Mesa Police Officer James Boubelik was recently interviewed by a local news source. He told reporters that when he pulls someone over for driving recklessly, he is looking for signs that indicate the driver is impaired such as the smell of alcohol or the driver slurring his or her speech.

However, the officer said that it's more than just alcohol he is looking for.  He is also on the lookout for people who are impaired by illegal drugs and prescription medication.  While interviewed, Officer Boubelik said that it can be difficult for police to recognize when a person is under the influence of prescription drugs versus alcohol.

He said, "At first they don't want to tell you anything" about the prescription drugs that they are consuming.  He then went on to say, "Then as you start seeing these different signs and symptoms they'll start opening up to you sometimes."

According to this police officer, abuse and misuse of prescription drugs in the state of Arizona is a growing problem and is also an issue that law enforcement agencies are targeting through increased public awareness and training.
