Tempe police and the East Valley DUI Task Force Partnering to Crack Down on DUI
Posted By Phoenix DUI Lawyer

In Arizona, new sources are saying that college students should think twice before having one last party prior to the first day of school.

It is reported that Tempe police and the East Valley DUI task force are teaming up over the course of the next two Saturdays. Over the weekend, they will be on the lookout for drivers who are under the influence in the eastern metro Phoenix area.

Police say that they will be conducting their DUI operations from the hours of 8 PM to 4 AM.  According to the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, there's a 30% chance that drivers will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some point in their lives.

In Arizona, people who are convicted of driving under the influence can be sentenced with mandatory jail time, hefty monetary fine, substantial court fees, driver's license suspension, vehicle impoundment, interlock devices as well as other fees.

If you have been charged with driving under the influence in Phoenix now is the time to consult with a Phoenix DUI lawyer. Contact our office today to set up your initial consultation.

  DUI Checkpoint Proves Successful
Posted By Phoenix DUI Lawyer

In Sierra Vista, members of the Southeastern Arizona DUI Task Force conducted a sobriety checkpoint on Saturday.  The checkpoint took place on State Route 80, which is just north of Davis Road.  During the checkpoint, police say 456 drove through.

Police say the checkpoint was successful as they were able to make several arrests.  First, they found two undocumented immigrant load vehicles.  All of the illegal immigrants were turned over to the Border Patrol.  Second, they stopped a GMC Denali and discovered the vehicle was loaded with marijuana.  Finally, police arrested two people for driving under the influence (DUI).

Police say that their sobriety checkpoints are made possible through grant funding by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.  They plan to conduct additional checkpoints throughout the year, particularly around holidays.

Arizona Task Force Makes 470 DUI Arrests over Holiday Weekend
Posted By Phoenix DUI Lawyer

In Phoenix, it is reported that the Arizona DUI task forces throughout the state made more than 470 DUI arrests over Memorial Day weekend.  The task forces' numbers show that one fourth of the drivers who were arrested were under suspicion of extreme DUI.

On Tuesday, official numbers were released by Governor Jan Brewer's office.  The numbers showed that 129 of the 476 DUI arrests that were made involved drivers who had blood alcohol concentrations of .15% or higher, which is almost twice the state's legal limit.  In Arizona, if people have blood alcohol concentrations of 0.08% or higher, they are considered to be under the influence.

During Memorial Day weekend in 2009, there were only 291 DUI arrests and only 77 cases involved extreme DUI.

The task forces were comprised of 1,334 police officers and deputies.  Police also say they made 76 DUI drug arrests during the holiday weekend, which ended on Monday night.

  DUI Checkpoint Announced
Posted By Phoenix DUI Lawyer

Recently, police officers announced that they would be conducting a DUI checkpoint near Castle Hot Springs Road alongside the Lake Pleasant entrance.  The checkpoint will take place on May 31st between the hours of 3 PM till 8 PM.  Police hope that the announcement of the checkpoint will deter people from driving under the influence in Phoenix and surrounding cities.

At the checkpoint, officers plan to stop cars and speak with drivers.  Police will be on the lookout for signs that are indicative of intoxication.  Those who appear to be DUI will be subjected to further investigation and questioning.

According to news sources, DUI checkpoints and related patrol events are held about once in a month.  During these events, drivers are encouraged to avoid drinking and driving as police are on the lookout and are looking to crackdown on those individuals who violate state law.

10 Drivers Arrested at Tucson DUI Checkpoint
Posted By Phoenix DUI Lawyer

Approximately 650 drivers were stopped at a Tucson sobriety checkpoint, resulting in 10 DUI arrests.

According to the Tucson Police Department, of the 10 drivers arrested for DUI, three were arrested on extreme DUI charges, which means their blood alcohol concentration was at least .15%—twice the legal limit. One of the drivers was also under the age of 21.

Those drivers arrested for DUI had, on average, a BAC of .146 percent.

The checkpoint was set up on East Irvington Road and South Lostan Avenue from about 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on January 29. Around 4 a.m. on January 30 officers conducted a DUI saturation patrol.

In addition to the 10 DUI arrests, police also issued 57 other citations and 6 vehicles were impounded.

Underage Drivers Targeted Near Mexican Border
Posted By Phoenix DUI Lawyer

Once again, the state of Arizona is cracking down hard on DUI offenders. Both Pima County and Nogales have received grants to help combat underage drinking and driving.

Pima County alone received more than $180,000 to implement more DUI checkpoints, track down drivers with outstanding DUI warrants, and conduct liquor license sweeps. The city of Nogales received $70,000 to do the same thing.

One of the areas DUI enforcement officers are hoping to target most is underage drinkers returning to the United States from Mexico. Because the drinking age in Mexico is 18, many young people travel across the border to drink and party, and then drive back into the U.S. In fact, people as young as 16 are going across the border because bars in Mexico don’t often ask for I.D.

Let’s just say it’s not a good idea for any young person to go across the border to drink. Not only is it illegal to drink and drive once you’ve re-entered the U.S., but due to the drug war raging in Northern Mexico it’s unsafe for American tourists of any age. That being said, if you and your friends decide to drink in Mexico, be sure to designate a sober driver. Once you enter Arizona, if you’re caught driving and driving you will be arrested and charged with DUI. Arizona has a very strict underage DUI policy, so strict in fact that having any detectable amount of alcohol in your system, even .01%, can lead to your arrest.

Our advice? If you’re under 21 be careful! The police are looking for people like you and will not hesitate to place you under arrest. In the event that you are arrested for underage drunk driving, you can contact the Knowles Law Firm to speak with an experienced Phoenix DUI attorney about your charges.

DUI Checkpoint Warnings Sent Through Twitter
Posted By Phoenix DUI Lawyer

When DUI checkpoints first started, it was a way for law enforcement officials to catch unsuspecting drunk drivers.  Part of the reason these checkpoints were so effective, and have continued to be effective, is that they catch drunk drivers off-guard.  Once a driver pulls into a checkpoint there is no way of getting around it.  The only way to pass through a checkpoint is to actually go through it.

Newspapers, TV news anchors, and other news outlets sometimes report when a DUI checkpoint is scheduled, but now people are taking matters into their own hands. Users of Twitter, the popular social networking/micro blogging site, are sending tweets altering people to the whereabouts of DUI checkpoints. When a person posts a tweet, it reaches his/her “Twitter friends” instantaneously, and many people have twitter updates sent directly to their cell phones in the form of a text message. Should a tweet come through about a DUI checkpoint, people can easily drive in the other direction if they’ve had too much to drink.

It seems as though police aren’t really angry about the warnings, but rather are concerned that drunk drivers who should be caught and arrested are still on the road,  risking the lives and safety of those around them.  Police officers are also concerned about people looking at their cell phones while driving, which has proven to increase a person’s chances of getting involved in an accident.
