No Excuse to Drink and Drive

Famous linebacker for the Arizona Cardinals, Clark Haggans, was called to spend nine days in jail for a DUI that was committed a year ago reports the SB Nation Arizona. Haggans claims that he drove under the influence because it was an absolute emergency. He was pulled over while on his way to the babysitter’s house who called saying that his daughter was having breathing problems. Knowing that he had too much to drink he attempted to contact his wife but was unable to reach her. Without seeking to find another way to get to his daughter, Haggans jumped in his car and drove to her house. On the way he ran through a red light and then was caught speeding by a police officer who then pulled him over.
As most parents can relate, hearing that a daughter isn’t breathing well is a scary thing. It is admirable that Haggans told the police officer that her safety and health were his highest concerns; however, it does not keep one from being responsible to the law. By Haggans getting into his vehicle while under the influence he not only put himself at risk but also other drivers and pedestrians. If he were to make it to the babysitter’s house and decided to take his daughter home, she would have been put at risk as well. Charges could have been a lot more severe had other people been involved in this.
