DUI and Wrong Way Driving in Arizona
Over the past several years, law enforcement agencies in the state of Arizona have noticed that there is a serious problem on the state's road ways – wrong way driving. According to officers, this problem has only increased and in the year 2009, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that twenty three people died during accidents that involved a driver heading the wrong way.
In an effort to address the problem, the Arizona Department of Transportation is looking into new technologies and solutions which include better road markers. Engineers working on such solutions say they are confident that the right combination of measures can keep motorists safe throughout the state while preventing incidences of wrong way driving.
When asked about the new measures, police say that they hope the new solutions will work as many fatal accidents are caused by DUI offenders who drive the wrong way on streets and highways. They also said that wrong way drivers are known to have higher incidences of traffic citations and felony convictions compared to average drivers.
