DUI Penalty Laws in Peoria May Change
The law regarding DUI penalties in Peoria could soon change, allowing anyone charged with a misdemeanor to be given the option of home detention instead of jail time.
An ordinance will be drafted by city law enforcement officials after the Peoria City Council agreed to the measure. This ordinance would allow anyone who is found guilty of shoplifting, drunken driving or small thefts to be placed under house arrest. This will be done, in part, to save the city an estimated $100,000 to $200,000 per year, according to City Attorney Steve Kemp.
Cities such as Phoenix, Surprise, Glendale and Goodyear have already instituted this policy and found success. Peoria's pilot program is set to start in July. Eligibility would only be extended to City Court cases; Justice Court and Superior Court cases will not qualify for this privilege.
There are some city officials that have expressed their concern with this pilot program. They worry that it could appear to be too lax on some criminals, even if it will save the city money in the long run.
