Cinco de Mayo Checkpoints
The Cinco de Mayo holiday will be keeping police in Phoenix busy this weekend conducting DUI checkpoints.
This holiday, well known for its rowdy nature, is a cause of concern for local law enforcement officials. This year the Gilbert and Mesa police are hoping to cut down on drunk driving during this weekend of heavy imbibing. Certain areas of the Valley will be saturated with police, such as the Westgate City Center, Old Town Scottsdale and Tempe's Mill Avenue, all of which contain multiple bars.
This increase in police presence should come as no surprise to locals who may already have witnessed more officers in public areas. After the commando raid that killed Osama bin Laden, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon ordered an increase in security in downtown Phoenix, especially at government buildings.
