Debate Surrounds Arizona's DUI Laws
Much debate has followed the change in Arizona's DUI laws, and now that they have been enacted, the critics are speaking louder than ever.
The new piece of legislation, entitled SB 1200, is being called a step back from previous legislation. However, its proponents argue that it will help shift the focus of drunk driving incidents from jail time to addressing the problem of alcohol abuse. The primary change that SB 1200 enacts is the length of time that an ignition interlock device will be installed in cars of first-time offenders. While the law previously stated that offenders would have the device in their vehicles for a period of 12 months, the new law dropped that time down to just six months.
However, the offender must earn the right to have the interlock device removed early. For those individuals who drive for a living, they will be outfitted with a Continuous Alcohol Monitoring (CAM) bracelet that checks alcohol levels every 30 minutes.
