What Behaviors Lead to a DUI Stop?
In the state of Arizona, it is illegal for people to drive while under the influence of alcohol or with a blood alcohol of 0.08% or higher. It's also illegal for people to operate a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.
When law enforcement suspects that drivers are under the influence, they will conduct a DUI stop to see if drivers are in fact impaired. While most people are aware of the
field sobriety and
breath tests that follow a traffic stop, they may not know what caused the pullover in the first place.
Years ago, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conducted a study that led to a list being compiled. On that list were driving behaviors that were, essentially, indicative of DUI. This list was given to police officers and is still followed. Some of the behaviors listed are:
- making excessively wide turns
- speeding
- swerving between traffic lanes
- weaving
- driving well below the posted speed limit
- driving too close to other motorists
- erratic braking
- ignoring or failing to respond to traffic signs
Any of these driving behaviors could lead to people being pulled over, even if they were not under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
