New Arizona DUI Law Will Impact Jury Trial Rights
This week, news sources announced that the Arizona public will not have the opportunity to vote on an important topic: the right of DUI offenders to have jury trials.
The local attorney that was responsible for collecting 86,405 signatures announced on Friday that he was unable to do so. In order for the measure to be placed on the 2012 ballot, over 86,000 signatures would have been required by July 19th. Due to the fact that the measure will not eligible for voting, a new law that strips DUI suspects of their right to jury trials will take effect this week.
Still, the attorney told reporters that his efforts are far from over as he will continue to challenge the recent Arizona DUI law. He says that the new legislation violates people's constitutional rights. However, one state Senator asserted that jury trials for DUI, when compared to other criminal offenses, take up too time, resources and money.
