House Detention Alternative Offered to DUI Offenders in Place of Jail
In an effort to reduce housing costs at a local jail this year, prison officials are working with the court system to enact certain changes.
One change that has been proposed relates to those individuals who are arrested for DUI. Rather than placing convicted DUI offenders in already crowded prisons, judges can opt to give out sentences of GPS ankle monitors instead. The home detention program is expected to save the county over $255,000 during the first year alone. To test the efficacy of this program, 141 offenders have been given the chance to serve a home sentence while wearing ankle bracelets.
On average, it costs the county $200 to book a person into jail and $75 daily to keep them there. Since 2006 the cost of jailing criminals has risen dramatically, 132 percent, and taxpayers and government officials are keen to reduce these costs over time.
People who have been arrested for DUI in Arizona can face a vast array of penalties if they are convicted.
