Phoenix Police Ready to Combat Holiday DUI
Police across the country are gearing up for a busy holiday season in which drunk drivers are known to hit the roads in higher numbers. In Phoenix, the police department has an annual campaign that is conducted around this time every year. It is called "Drive Hammered Get Nailed" and it is very successful at cutting down on drunk driving and alcohol-caused accidents. Last year alone police in Phoenix detained 5,000 impaired drivers just during the holidays.
Arizona is known for having some of the toughest DUI laws in the country. Nearly everyone who is pulled over for drunk driving will spend some time behind bars, even if it is just a few hours. To help officers process drunk drivers, six new vehicles were added to the fleet. These vehicles will be used to help officers process more intoxicated drivers without putting an extra strain on the police force. After spending $1 million on the new vehicles, city officials are hoping to see a serious reduction in DUI arrests over the next few months.
