Judge Gives DUI Offender Lenient Sentence
Even though he was part of a program designed to keep him out of jail, an older man was sentenced to over a year behind bars for drinking and driving.
The 68-year-old suspect went before a district judge last week to discuss the details of his case. After hearing both sides, the judge agreed to a lighter sentence of 13 months of jail before the man could be considered eligible for parole. While he could have been sentenced to at least 15 years, since this was his second felony DUI on record, the judge agreed to a lesser sentence as well as a fine of $4,500.
No stranger to the criminal system, the man had actually been part of a program designed to keep him out of jail. He had been arrested three times within seven years for drunk driving and reports say his drinking may have stemmed from his wife's death from cancer. However, the judge could only be so lenient and was considered kind to have given the defendant such a light sentence despite his criminal history.
