New Legislature Tough on First Time DUI Offenders
Although Arizona is known for having tough DUI laws, first-time offenders might get a break if new legislature is passed.
Taunya Strocchio, mother to four-year-old Alyana Strocchio who died at the hands of a drunk driver, was just one of many people to protest the new law. Along with other members of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD), Strocchio said, "There aren't words to explain to you how devastating it is to lose your daughter", with tears in her eyes.
The new bill, known as SB 1200, would reduce the mandatory amount of time that an interlock device would have to be installed in their car. Currently the law calls for one year; the new bill would cut it down to just six months. This device stops drunk drivers from operating their vehicles by forcing them to blow into the device to test their current blood-alcohol level.
