Arizona Fights to Reduce Penalties for 1st Time DUI Offenders
State legislators in Arizona are fighting to reduce certain DUI penalties for first-time offenders.
If Sen. Steve Pierce R-Prescott gets his way, first-time offenders will only have to use an ignition-interlock system for six months, versus the current 12 month period, and jail time would be reduced as well. He believes that it will "help keep people on the road." Fellow senator Linda Gray, R-Phoenix, added that cutting costs is another goal of the change.
Harsh policies like the interlock system were blamed for "damaging families, damaging people's lives". However, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, a group that has been rallying against the change, doesn't see it this way. In their minds, keeping intoxicated people off of the road is a greater priority and a necessary penalty for their actions.
